MetService Alerts Severe Storm Risk in Auckland, Northland & Coromandel

MetService just slapped a thunderstorm watch on Auckland, Northland, and the Coromandel Peninsula, with conditions expected to intensify through the evening of July 29, 2025.

So here’s the lowdown: as of this morning, MetService Locals are being warned to prepare for intense downpours, strong winds, and the potential for flash flooding through the evening and into the night.

Areas Most at Risk

  • Rain so heavy (up to 40mm an hour!) it’ll feel like you’re showering outside, especially if you’re kicking around inland Coromandel or central Northland.
  • Flash floods—Meanwhile, Auckland and Northland could experience multiple short but intense bursts of rain, accompanied by wind gusts, throughout the evening commute.
“People should avoid unnecessary travel, especially in storm-prone areas,” Murray said.

This alert runs until midnight, but honestly, keep an eye out—things can change fast with these storms.

Impact on Locals and Travel

For you, Auckland commuters, expect wet roads, foggy windows, and the kind of traffic jams that make you question your life choices. Folks in rural Northland, you might lose power for a bit—maybe dig out those candles now.

Weekend plans and outdoor activities could be disrupted in Coromandel if the storm lingers into Wednesday.

On the bright side, local councils are on the ball with weather monitoring, and Civil Defence is basically lurking in the background, ready to jump in if things go sideways.
