Sudden storm hits popular lakeside campground
A fast-moving tornado tore through the Dudding Lake motor camp near Whanganui on Monday afternoon, flipping a parked caravan and injuring one person. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of severe wind damage, fallen trees, and power lines down across the campground and nearby roads.
The injured person received treatment from St John staff before being transported to hospital in stable condition. Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews secured the area, cleared debris, and checked neighbouring sites for further hazards. Several campers were forced to relocate after strong gusts ripped through tents and temporary shelters.
Power outages and road disruption across the region
The sudden weather event triggered local power outages as falling branches struck overhead lines. Network crews responded quickly to restore electricity to affected properties. Police also closed parts of nearby access roads while contractors removed downed trees and assessed structural risks.
Residents across parts of Manawatū and Whanganui reported intense wind bursts, heavy rain, and brief hail during the storm’s peak. MetService confirmed conditions were consistent with a short-lived tornado activity linked to unstable weather sweeping across the lower North Island.
Safety reminder for campers and travellers
Authorities continue to urge campers and motorists to stay alert during fast-changing weather conditions. Temporary shelters, caravans, and lakeside areas remain vulnerable during high wind events, especially during storm fronts that develop rapidly without extended warning.
Travellers planning outdoor stays are advised to monitor official forecasts closely, secure loose items, and relocate to safer ground if severe weather warnings are issued.
What locals should expect next
Crews will remain on site over the next few days to complete safety inspections and ensure damaged areas meet entry standards. Council teams will also review storm response procedures at high-risk recreational areas following this incident.
For now, access to parts of the Dudding Lake campground remains restricted while clean-up and safety checks continue.
