Waiuku Recycling Fire Prompts Smoke Warning for Residents

Auckland Waiuku fire alert

Large Blaze at Recycling Facility

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responded to a major rubbish fire just before 11 pm on Monday at a recycling plant in Waiuku, Auckland. The fire consumed a large amount of plastic set for recycling and ignited six shipping containers.

Significant Firefighting Operation

At its peak, around 60 firefighters from 16 trucks were deployed to the site. By early Tuesday morning, the blaze was contained, and the major fire risk had decreased.

Health Advisory Issued

Because of the thick smoke, FENZ issued a detailed smoke advisory for locals: people in the area are urged to keep windows and doors shut, turn off ventilation systems in both homes and vehicles, and stay indoors if possible. Those who need to go out for essential reasons are advised to wear a face mask or cover their nose and mouth with clothing.

If the smoke causes breathing difficulties, residents are encouraged to call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or seek medical help.

Investigation Underway

Fire and Emergency have confirmed their specialist. Fire investigators will work with police to determine the cause of the blaze. Police have maintained a scene guard and intend to examine the site further. RNZ

Community Impact & Recovery

In addition to health risks, the fire has disrupted traffic. The Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade reports road closures in the area, including part of Kitchener Road, which remains blocked while crews and investigators work.

For now, FENZ says it’s safe for residents to reopen their homes and let fresh air in—the worst of the smoke has cleared.
