A tragic incident occurred at Jellie Park Recreation and Sport Centre in Burnside, Christchurch, earlier this week. A person has passed away after a medical emergency at the council-owned facility.
The incident happened around 9:49 am on Monday, when emergency services were called to the pool and gym. St John Ambulance responded, but unfortunately, the person died at the scene.
Police arrived shortly after, at 10:35 am, and confirmed the death. They’ve stated that there are no suspicious circumstances, and the matter is now being referred to the coroner for further investigation.
As a result of the incident, Jellie Park was temporarily evacuated. The centre reopened later in the afternoon, at 3:30 pm, allowing patrons to return to their regular activities.
Jellie Park is a popular spot for the community, offering both fitness and leisure options. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the person involved.
