Dunedin Father Michael Sherry Named After Scott Technology Accident

The Dunedin community is grieving after the sudden death of Michael “Sherry” Sherry, who lost his life last week in a workplace accident at Scott Technology.

Sherry, originally from Mackay, Queensland, had built a life with his young family here in Dunedin. He was a husband, a father to two little girls — aged just three years and five months — and someone whose warmth and laughter made a mark on everyone he met.

On Thursday afternoon, emergency services were called to the Scott Technology site on Kaikorai Valley Road just before 4pm. Despite efforts, Sherry didn’t make it. He had only been with the company since September last year, working as a PLC technician.

News of his death has hit hard. Family and friends describe Sherry as a “true lover of music” and “a friend to all. Someone who lived with his heart wide open. His sudden passing, they say, has left an enormous hole in their lives.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the accident on behalf of the coroner, while WorkSafe New Zealand has also launched its own investigation.

In the days since, a Givealittle page has been set up to help support his wife and daughters. The page describes Sherry’s biggest dream: to see his girls live big, beautiful lives, knowing they were deeply loved.

Scott Technology has confirmed the incident, saying they are “deeply saddened” and are focused on supporting Sherry’s family and colleagues through what they called an incredibly difficult time.

For everyone who knew him, Sherry wasn’t just a workmate or a friendly face. He was family. And he leaves behind memories, love, and a community that won’t ever forget him.
